What we tell our neighbours
Locks, keys and doors reward a little attention. A drop of the right lubricant, a spare key in a sensible place, a rekey when someone moves out. The advice here covers those small habits and the bigger decisions, like choosing between mechanical and electronic locks.

How do I make sure this never happens again?
Three habits cover most households. Give a spare key to someone you trust who lives nearby. Fix a small combination lockbox somewhere discreet on the property for the one day a year everyone is out at once. And if you have a keypad lock, add a code for a family member and keep the mechanical override key on your keyring rather than in a drawer inside. The locksmith can set up any of these before leaving. Home Lockout Service
My key turns all the way but the door stays locked. What has failed?
Usually the link between the cylinder and the bolt. On a storefront lock the cam behind the mortise cylinder can wear or slip out of position; on a lever or mortise lockset the tailpiece or a spring in the deadlatch gives up. Your key is fine and so are the pins, so once the door is opened the fix is a new cam, tailpiece or latch, and your existing keys carry on working. Business Lockout Service
Can you extract a key from a padlock, mailbox or filing cabinet?
Yes. Small cylinders in padlocks, mailboxes, desk drawers, filing cabinets and cam locks on lockers hold a fragment the same way a door does, and the same slim hooks and spirals fit them. Their keyways are narrower, so it is finer work. Where a padlock is not worth saving, the locksmith will say so and offer a cut-off and a new padlock keyed to your preference instead. Broken Key Extraction
Should I keep the broken lock and strike?
Yes, unless the insurer has already said they are not needed. Insurers generally ask policyholders to retain damaged property until the claim is settled, and a bag holding the twisted cylinder, torn strike and split wood answers an adjuster's questions more clearly than any description. The locksmith hands them over at the end of the visit along with a written note of what was replaced. Photographs of the parts in place, before removal, complete the record. Change or Rekey Locks
How many new keys will I get, and can I get more later?
As many as you ask for, cut on site from the fresh pinning and tested in each door they should open; two or three is typical for a household. More can be cut later. When you do, bring one of the locksmith's originals to be copied rather than a copy of a copy, since every generation strays slightly from the intended depths. If any key is a restricted type, additional copies come from the record kept for that system rather than from a hardware store. Lock Rekeying
The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?
The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort. Deadbolt Installation
What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?
Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Do I need to prove I own the house before you work on the lock?
Yes, and it is a normal part of any lock or key work. Photo identification together with something that ties you to the address is enough. If you rent, the locksmith will ask who should receive the keys, because landlords and tenants in this province are expected to agree on lock changes and share keys. This check takes a moment and it protects every household the locksmith is asked to work for. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Can a safe be repaired instead of replaced after drilling?
Often, yes, particularly for a mechanical lock, where a worn wheel pack, drive cam or spindle can be replaced individually within the existing lock body. An electronic lock's circuit board and keypad are less often repairable in place and are more commonly swapped for a comparable or higher-rated replacement unit that fits the same cutout. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Can a safe hold both cash and paper documents at the same time?
Yes, though it is worth knowing the interior conditions suited to each are slightly different. Paper gains real heat protection from a fire-rated lining, but that same sealed lining traps humidity, so paper stored inside needs the same periodic airing and a desiccant packet as any fire-rated interior. Cash and other valuables mainly need the tool resistance of the body and door and tolerate the sealed environment more easily. A single well-chosen unit can hold both together without conflict, particularly with paper kept in a sealed folder or bag inside. Safe Installation & Servicing
What about the glass panel next to my front door?
A sidelight within reach of the inside thumb-turn is the weak point of an otherwise strong door, since a broken pane lets a hand reach the turn. Options include moving the deadbolt further from the glass, a lock function that needs a key inside as well, or a laminated pane. Because everyone must still be able to leave easily, the locksmith talks through the trade-offs and helps you pick the arrangement that suits your household. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
Do I need my landlord's consent before rekeying my unit?
Read the lease, because that is where the answer lives. Commercial tenancies are governed mostly by the lease itself, and many leases require the tenant to tell the landlord when locks change, to provide a key for emergencies, or to use the landlord's approved locksmith. Doors on the building's master system, such as corridor or service doors, are normally the landlord's to change. Bring the lease to the assessment and the locksmith will sort the doors accordingly. Commercial Rekeying
Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?
Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. Master Key System Design
What happens at a networked location if the network or Wi-Fi goes down?
A standalone reader at a single door keeps working during a network or Wi-Fi outage, since it checks its own stored list rather than relying on a live connection. A networked controller generally keeps making local decisions at each door as well, though live updates, remote changes and off-site log access may pause until the connection returns. Access Control Installation
Can one visit cover several doors in the same building?
Yes, and it is common. A building rarely has only one exit affected by an occupant-load or fire-rating question; stairway doors, assembly-room exits and any doors altered together during a renovation are usually assessed and fitted in the same visit, with one written record covering every device installed across the building. Car Keys
What should I have ready when I call?
The make, model and year of the vehicle, the colour and plate if you can see it, exactly where the car is parked and how to reach it, and where the keys are: on the seat, in the trunk, lost, snapped, or in a fob that has gone quiet. Say whether anyone or any animal is inside, whether the car is a rental or a company vehicle, and whether your identification is on you or in the glovebox. Car Lockout Service
My key needs a wiggle in the ignition. Will a new key help?
Often, yes. A key that has been copied from copies or worn thin over the years lifts the wafers to the wrong heights, and a fresh blade cut to code restores the fit. If the wiggle continues with the new key, the wafers in the ignition cylinder have worn as well, and that cylinder can be overhauled so both the old and new keys turn cleanly. The locksmith checks the cylinder during the visit and tells you which it is. Car Key Replacement
Why does the VIN matter for making a spare key?
The VIN identifies the exact immobilizer generation and lock system your particular vehicle left the factory with, which decides whether the chip can be copied directly or needs to be freshly coded through the diagnostic port, and which blank and blade profile are correct. Two cars that look identical from the outside can use different systems a model year apart, so the VIN removes the guesswork. Spare Car Key Duplication
What does testing remote start or passive entry actually involve?
Each function the vehicle offers is tried in person once the fob is registered: trying whatever passive-entry action that vehicle actually needs, approach alone, or a handle touch, grip or button press, pressing the remote start button and confirming the engine turns over, and checking that the vehicle re-locks or shuts down the way it is meant to. Nothing is assumed to work simply because the fob was accepted by the vehicle's memory. Key Fob Programming
