Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The renovation wrapped up in the spring. The crew was good, the kitchen looks right, and the key you handed the foreman on day one was never handed back.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

In plain words

Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours. Rekeying leaves all of that alone and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the pin stack on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a different key runs it. For hardware in good condition, that is the sensible choice: the door looks and feels as it did while the old key is retired. A worn cylinder can be replaced and keyed to match the rest in the same visit.

Sound familiar?

The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally. Four are unaccounted for.

How the visit goes

Haldimand County

How the visit goes

  1. Where the tenant and landlord line falls

Rented and shared buildings add a boundary that the locksmith maps early. A tenant's suite door is theirs to use but a lock change is agreed with the landlord, who receives keys as well. A condominium suite cylinder may sit on the building's master system, so its rekey is planned so the master still works, and the lobby, garage and amenity doors stay with the corporation. A small business rekeying a shop door checks what the lease says about the landlord holding a key. Sorting this out on the doorstep keeps every party informed and lets the work proceed with no surprise phone calls the following week.

  2. Cutting the new keys on site

Common keys are cut on the van rather than ordered in, though some restricted systems need the blank from an authorised distributor first. The first key is cut on a code machine, a crisp, original-depth key rather than a copy of a copy, and tried in the first repinned cylinder before another is touched, so any adjustment happens once. The rest are cut to the same code, deburred, and tested in turn. Keys cut this way run smoothly from the start and stay accurate through years of copying, because every later duplicate can be made from the code rather than from a worn blade.

  3. Spares that live outside the house

A rekey is the natural moment to decide where the spare goes, because the one under the planter is the reason many of these calls happen. A key with a trusted neighbour or nearby relative is the simplest answer. A small combination lockbox fixed in a discreet spot, with the code shared only with the people on your list, is a step up and can be fitted before the locksmith leaves. For families with a keypad lock, a personal code for each member does the same job without a key at all. Whichever you pick, the spare is now a planned thing with a known home rather than a habit.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Number of keys cut

New keys are cut on site and counted individually. Two for a couple or six for a household with teenagers and a sitter: name the number and the quote reflects it.

  2. 2The kind of lock each cylinder lives in

Knob, lever, deadbolt, mortise and rim cylinders come out of the door differently and take different care to refit. A mortise cylinder in a century home is more involved than a builder-grade knob.

  3. 3Upgrades chosen during the visit

Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions

Does the locksmith need to see the actual lost key, or just look at the lock?

Just the lock, and the door it is fitted to. A rekey works on the cylinder itself: the locksmith opens it, fits a new set of pins matched to a fresh key, and the old key stops working the moment that is done, whether or not it ever turns up again. Knowing roughly how the old key looked, cut on both edges, a chip on the head, a certain brand, can still help identify which cylinders in the house shared that key.

How many new keys should I ask for?

Count the people who genuinely need one and add one for a known spare location: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver or regular sitter, the neighbour who checks the house, the landlord if you rent. Keys are cut on site, so the number is easy to settle during the visit. Fewer keys with names attached is the point; another can always be cut later from the code.

I live in a condominium. Which locks are mine to rekey?

Your suite door is generally the one you can act on, and it may sit on a building master system, so the locksmith plans the rekey so the master still operates while the old change key stops working. Lobby doors, the parking gate, amenity rooms and the mailroom belong to the corporation; report a lost fob or key for those to the property manager, who deactivates or reissues it. The locksmith can help sort which is which.
