Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey in Cayuga
The renovation wrapped up in the spring. The crew was good, the kitchen looks right, and the key you handed the foreman on day one was never handed back.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey
In plain words
How much a lost key matters depends on what was lost with it. A ring that dropped into a lake on a canoe trip tells nobody where it fits, so the rekey is a tidy precaution. A ring taken with a wallet or bag that carried your address is a different story: someone now holds both the key and the door it opens, and the rekey comes first. The locksmith asks about this on the phone, says plainly which situation you are in, and schedules the visit accordingly. The work is the same either way, and so is the outcome: a key nobody else has.
How the visit goesThe lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally. Four are unaccounted for.

How the visit goes
Rekey or replace, cylinder by cylinder
Rekeying suits hardware in sound condition, and most cylinders on a house qualify. The locksmith flags the exceptions while the list is being made: a plug worn oval by decades of use, a cylinder packed with salt and grit from a side door that faces the driveway, a knob lock so light it offers little resistance, or a keyway that no longer has blanks available. For those, a replacement cylinder or a complete new deadbolt keyed to match the rest is proposed as its own item, so you decide door by door. The aim is that every cylinder leaving the visit on a new key is one that will keep turning well for years.
Setting a new combination pin by pin
On a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, with it on the bench, the plug is turned slightly and a follower is slid in behind it so the springs and top pins stay in the housing rather than scattering. The plug comes out and the old bottom pins are tipped away. The new key is cut first, then a pin whose length matches each cut is dropped into the corresponding chamber, checked flush with a gauge, and the loaded plug is guided back under the follower. The plug should turn with a light, even feel and no catch. If it drags on one chamber, that pin is sized again before anything goes back on the door.
One key on the ring
If the house was keyed alike during the visit, the ring that goes back in your pocket is lighter. One key opens the front door, the back door, the garage entry and the gate. Each family member carries one thing instead of a jangle, and the question of which key goes to the dog walker has one answer. New doors added later, a shed or a workshop, can be pinned to the same code when they are installed. Guests and sitters find the arrangement easier too, and a single key is a good deal harder to lose than a bunch.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Upgrades chosen during the visit
Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.
2Time and day of the call
A weekday afternoon and a late evening or holiday call cost the same amount for a lost-key rekey. When a stolen wallet makes the visit urgent, the locksmith still confirms the exact figure on site, once the cylinders and keys needed have been looked at.
3The kind of lock each cylinder lives in
Knob, lever, deadbolt, mortise and rim cylinders come out of the door differently and take different care to refit. A mortise cylinder in a century home is more involved than a builder-grade knob.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
Does the locksmith need to see the actual lost key, or just look at the lock?
Just the lock, and the door it is fitted to. A rekey works on the cylinder itself: the locksmith opens it, fits a new set of pins matched to a fresh key, and the old key stops working the moment that is done, whether or not it ever turns up again. Knowing roughly how the old key looked, cut on both edges, a chip on the head, a certain brand, can still help identify which cylinders in the house shared that key.
How many new keys should I ask for?
Count the people who genuinely need one and add one for a known spare location: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver or regular sitter, the neighbour who checks the house, the landlord if you rent. Keys are cut on site, so the number is easy to settle during the visit. Fewer keys with names attached is the point; another can always be cut later from the code.
I live in a condominium. Which locks are mine to rekey?
Your suite door is generally the one you can act on, and it may sit on a building master system, so the locksmith plans the rekey so the master still operates while the old change key stops working. Lobby doors, the parking gate, amenity rooms and the mailroom belong to the corporation; report a lost fob or key for those to the property manager, who deactivates or reissues it. The locksmith can help sort which is which.
